Can you imagine? Summer is practically over and soon enough, the leaves will change, the smell of pumpkin and apples will delight our noses, and the humid air will turn cold. As the weather transitions from summer to fall, you may need to adjust your healthy haircare routine to accommodate for the colder months ahead. In the summer, many of us opt for lightweight oils and products and often manipulate our hair by rocking protective styles, such as box braids, or defining our curls in wash n goes.
While the summer can produce some of our best, effortless hair days due to the natural moisture in the air caused by humidity, fall (and winter for that matter) can have the opposite effect. Cold weather can potentially cause dryness and weaken our already, fragile strands. Here at Henna Sooq, we want you to have your best hair possible, regardless of what the weather throws at you. Here’s our top five tips to help you easily transition into the fall season.
Tip #1: Start With A Fresh Slate
We recommend starting each new season with a fresh, full henna or cassia treatment. If you are worried about hair color changes, amla or fenugreek are great alternatives that can moisturize and fortify the hair at the same time. The purpose of a strengthening treatment is to combat breakage, strengthen hair strands, reduce shedding and prepare the hair for the season to come. No matter how naturally dry your hair is, every hair type and texture can benefit from treatments that keep hair strands strong and damage-free. Be sure to always follow up a strengthening treatment with your favorite moisturizing conditioner or deep conditioner. Following up with a moisture treatment helps to maintain the strength-moisture balance within our hair strands. Our hair is happiest when it is balanced! Our cowash conditioners are also excellent for restoring moisture to dry hair and helping to remove any residue left behind from these herbal treatments.
If you find yourself dealing with excessive shedding due to the change in weather, we encourage you to experiment with hair teas. You can create a hair tea by simply combining some of your favorite ayurvedic powders in hot water for at least 20-30 minutes. We personally recommend amla, bhringraj, and aloe vera. If you want a more powerful herbal blend to keep shedding at bay, you should try our Ayurvedic Hair Tea. This pre-packaged tea is chock-full with ten miracle herbs that will stimulate faster hair growth, strengthen your hair at the root, and fortify dry, damaged hair. The best way to use a hair tea is as a hair rinse, as a hair spritz or leave in spray, or layered under a prepoo or deep conditioner.
Tip #3: Cowash to Combat Dryness
Although cleansing our hair with shampoo is important for healthy hair growth, cowashing is a great alternative, especially for those of us whose hair tends to be on the drier side. We advise using a cowash with cleansing ingredients, and not just conditioning ingredients, to properly clean the hair without stripping the natural moisture. We offer three different cowashes depending on your fragrance preference, but they are all guaranteed to simultaneously clean and moisturize the hair. Our cowashes are infused with one of the most effective cleansing herbs, shikakai. Shikakai removes hair lice and dandruff, strengthens and thickens hair, and nourishes hair at the root.
Tip #4: Oil and Butter are Your Friends
Sealing the hair with an oil or butter may be a step we skip during the summer months, but if you experience significant breakage, single strand knots, and split ends, using an oil or butter can be beneficial for length retention. Oils and butters seal in moisture from leave ins and creams and coat the strands to provide lubrication that protects against breakage.Try our Amla Oil, Ayurvedic Hair Oil, or Sweet Mimosa Butter if you haven’t already! We know that our hair grows, on average, half an inch a month, but we may not see the retention of our glorious inches, due to the culprits mentioned above. If you wear your hair out during the colder seasons, your hair can rub against sweaters, coats, and rough-textured scarves that can compromise the health of your hair, especially at the ends. Not only should you incorporate oiling and buttering your ends, but we recommend protecting your ends as much as possible by using buns and updos, or using satin and silk scarves to drape around your shoulders.
Tip #5: Don’t Skip Deep Conditioning
Fall/winter is no time to skip deep conditioning! Deep conditioning moisturizes and hydrates the hair and combats dryness, so a weekly deep conditioning session will keep your hair healthy and juicy. Try mixing our Sweet Honey Enriching Hair Nourisher into one of your favorite deep conditioners to take the moisture to another level, or try one of our pre-mixed Ayurvedic masks. such as the Hibiscus Restorative Hair Mask. If you already have some of our finely-sifted powders in your stash. try adding a teaspoon or two into your favorite hair mask to further stimulate hair growth. Honestly, the options are endless! We recommend intensifying your deep conditioning experience using a heating cap or hair steamer.
