How to Make Your Own Super Simple DIY Hair Serum

How to Make Your Own Super Simple DIY Hair Serum - Henna Sooq

This summer has been hot, humid and all the vacations we've been taking have been taking a toll on our hair strands.

Most of us will need to focus on moisture and hydration. After doing a hydrating or moisturizing hair treatment or mask, it is essential to use a hair serum to lock in that moisture. Hair serums add a protective layer to your hair to help seal in moisture and hydrate your hair. This helps to smooth frizz and protect your hair throughout the day! And surprisingly, hair serums are much easier to make than you might think.

This serum that we are going to make is hydrating and it’s going to help balance your hair and scalp. It’s not going to be too heavy or too rich so it is the perfect go-to serum for delicate and fine hair strands, as well as relaxed hair and even locs!

What is the difference between a hair serum vs hair oil?

Hair Oils are usually used for full treatments. They are richer and thicker in texture, and are usually used as a pre-poo treatment to nourish the hair and scalp. This can be done as an overnight treatment or a pre-poo. Hair Serums are usually lighter in texture and used more for styling purposes, locking in moisture, and protecting your hair from the sun.

How to Create Your Own DIY Hair Serum

For this serum, you will need:

  • Moroccan Hair Tea
  • Camellia Oil
  • Golden Jojoba Oil
  • Argan Oil
  • Lavender Essential Oil
  • Rosemary Essential Oil
  • Spray Bottle

The steps:

  • You can either boil water with the hair tea bag in the water for 10 minutes, or let the tea bag steep in room temperature water for a couple hours. While that is steeping, you can prepare the rest of the serum.
  • Start by adding 1 TBSP of the Golden Jojoba Oil into the plastic spray bottle.
  • Follow that up by adding about 1 tsp of Camellia Oil and 1 tsp of Argan Oil.
    • If you want a bit of a lighter texture, you can use 1 TBSP of Camellia oil and 1 tsp of Golden Jojoba Oil since Camellia Oil is a bit lighter in texture.
  • Now it’s time to make it smell amazing! You can play around with what ratio you want to get the perfect scent, but I love to add about 4 drops of each essential oil.
  • Swirl the Serum around to make sure that it gets all blended.
  • Once the hair tea has infused, wait for it to cool off a little bit and then pour it right into the plastic bottle.
  • Close the bottle, shake, and there you go! You have your own DIY hair serum!

While this serum will last at least a month if kept in the refrigerator, if you want to make it last even longer, you can add a preservative to make sure that it stays good for as long as possible. One that I recommend is called Germall and you can easily find that on Amazon. If you use that, you just need a very small amount and it will keep your hair serum good for at least 6 months.

See how simple that was? This is such a fun and easy DIY recipe that your hair is absolutely going to love. If you give this a try, make sure to tag us on Instagram @Hennasooq with your photos and videos - I can’t wait to see how you love this recipe!
